The Eye of Ra Amulet is perhaps the best known of all Egyptian protective amulets. It is a symbol of protective force, royal vigor, good health and life-giving power. It was celebrated in temple rituals and its deterrent aspect was invoked in the protection of the pharaoh, of sacred places and of ordinary people and their homes.
At the center of the Amulet there is an embedded coin. One side of the coin depicts the Eye of Ra, which is an extension of Ra’s power (ancient Egyptian sun god) and it was believed that the power of the Eye defended Ra against agents of disorder who threatened his rule. The Eye of Ra is deeply involved with the sun god's creative actions and was similarly believed to ward off evil, thus making it a powerful amulet against the 'Evil Eye', just like in the common Hebrew phrase “Neged Ayin HaRa” (“against the Evil Eye”).
The other side of the coin is engraved with the “SATOR Square”, to further enhance the protective power of this Amulet. The ancient SATOR Square is a fourfold Palindrome Magic Square. The words may be read top-to-bottom, bottom-to-top, left-to-right or right-to-left. When read top-to-bottom and left-to-right, it forms the palindromic sentence "SATOR AREPO TENET OPERA ROTAS". This sentence is traditionally used for protection and for overcoming danger and difficulties. The words are in Latin and their exact meaning is still uncertain to this day.
The coin is placed at the center of the Amulet and between Egyptian Falcon Wings, whose protective aspect was praised in Egyptian lore. The shadow of the Falcon’s Wings is perceived as our ‘shelter’ in this life and the purpose of the wings is to protect against evil and to symbolize our spiritual flight and Ascent to the Heavens.
Apart from the protective power of the Eye of Ra, this Amulet also represents divine consciousness and as such, is an expression of our active, waking state of ‘Lucid Living’.
